MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — Motorists navigating through Montgomery Township, Montgomery County, are poised to face travel disruptions next week as utility work intensifies under a sweeping $14.2 million intersection improvement project. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has outlined plans for critical upgrades at the bustling Five-Points Intersection, where Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) converge.
From Monday, May 6, through Friday, May 10, between 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, drivers will encounter alternating lane closures and shifts in traffic patterns at strategic segments along the involved state highways. The affected stretches include Route 309 between North Wales Road and McLaughlin Road, Route 463 between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road, and Business U.S. 202 between Route 309 and Betty’s Avenue. Travelers are encouraged to budget extra time into their commutes, as backups and delays are anticipated amidst the ongoing work. The execution of these activities remains subject to favorable weather conditions.
At the heart of this ambitious initiative is the objective to enhance travel safety and efficiency at one of the area’s most complex intersections. To this end, the project will introduce additional through lanes on Route 463 in both directions and on southbound Route 309. This expansion, increasing the approach lanes to the intersection from 15 to 18, aims to significantly ease traffic flow and curtail crash incidents.
Furthermore, the comprehensive suite of improvements includes the upgrading and retiming of signals, the installation of sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and guiderail systems, alongside enhancements to stormwater drainage, signage, and pavement markings. Adjustments to driveway access and measures to mitigate erosion and sediment are also part of the project scope.
Notably, the enhancements targeting Route 463 and Route 309 will facilitate smoother transitions for westbound Route 463 motorists attempting right turns onto northbound Business U.S. 202.
West Chester-based Road-Con, Inc. serves as the general contractor for this federally funded project.
