MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — Next week, motorists navigating through Montgomery Township, Montgomery County, will encounter temporary traffic adjustments and lane closures due to ongoing utility work. This effort is part of a comprehensive $14.2 million project aimed at enhancing travel and safety at the bustling Five-Points Intersection, where Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) converge.
From Monday, April 29, through Friday, May 3, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, alternating lane closures will be implemented at several key points:
- On Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) from North Wales Road to McLaughlin Road.
- Along Route 463 (Cowpath Road/Horsham Road) between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road.
- On Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) stretching from Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) to Betty’s Avenue.
PennDOT advises drivers to plan for extra travel time when passing through these areas due to anticipated backups and delays. The progression of this utility work, part of the intersection improvement endeavor, is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
The project’s focus is to facilitate smoother traffic flow and decrease the incidence of crashes at this critical junction. By adding additional through lanes on the approaches to the intersection, both in the directions on Route 463 and southbound on Route 309, the roadway will expand to accommodate 18 travel lanes, up from the current 15. This expansion is designed to significantly improve how traffic moves through the intersection.
Additional enhancements include the upgrading and retiming of signalization, the installation of sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and guide rail, as well as improvements to stormwater drainage, signage, and pavement markings. Measures to adjust driveway access and mitigate erosion sediment are also planned.
Specifically, upgrades on Route 463 and Route 309 will benefit westbound Route 463 motorists intending to turn right onto northbound Business U.S. 202 by streamlining their movement.
Road-Con, Inc., based in West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor overseeing this vital infrastructure project, which is funded entirely by federal dollars. Through careful planning and execution, this initiative promises to enhance the overall safety and efficiency of one of Montgomery County’s key intersections.
