EAST HEMPFIELD TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has revised the construction schedule for the new Centerville Road bridge over Route 30 in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, due to an impending rain forecast. Originally slated to begin tonight and continue through Friday night, the beam-setting activities are now rescheduled for Thursday night through Saturday night, April 4-6, weather permitting.
Starting Thursday, April 4, motorists traveling eastbound on Route 30 should expect lane closures beginning at 8:00 PM to facilitate the removal of overhead deck formwork. Initially, the right lane will be closed, followed by a shift to the left lane closure. This phase of the work is anticipated to conclude by 6:00 AM on Friday morning.
The construction efforts will intensify on Friday, April 5, with the closure of the southbound lane on Centerville Road and the westbound Route 30 off-ramp’s right turn lane starting at 7:00 PM. At 8:00 PM, the left lane of eastbound Route 30 will also be shut down to allow for the setting of beams on the eastbound side of the bridge. To minimize disruption, rolling stops on Route 30 are scheduled between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM, continuing until approximately 2:00 AM.
On Saturday, April 6, similar closures will apply for the setting of beams on the bridge’s westbound side, with rolling stops again planned to start between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM and expected to last until around 2:00 AM.
Following this weekend’s beam setting, the project will proceed with night work throughout the next week, involving lane closures in both directions on Route 30 from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM for the installation of deck pans and overhang formwork. The specific lanes closed will vary depending on the contractor’s location on the bridge.
Motorists navigating through the area are advised to remain vigilant, exercise caution, and prepare for slow-moving traffic during these operations.
This construction is a key component of the Centerville Road Interchange Improvement project, which aims to enhance the infrastructure through structure replacement, roadway widening, milling, guiderail and drainage improvements, pavement markings, ADA compliance upgrades, traffic signal enhancements, and other miscellaneous constructions.
Spanning from Cornerstone Drive to Marietta Avenue (Route 23) on Centerville Road, and extending on Marietta Avenue from Centerville Road to Stony Battery Road, the project predominantly affects East Hempfield Township, with a portion extending into Manor Township.
JD Eckman, Inc., based in Atglen, PA, serves as the prime contractor on this ambitious $36.3 million project, which is slated for completion by July 22, 2025. As PennDOT forges ahead with these essential improvements, drivers are encouraged to plan their travels accordingly to accommodate the updated construction timeline.
