Union Township Secures $166,000 in State Grants for Key Community Projects

Grants

UNION TWPState Sen. Katie Muth (D-Chester/Montgomery/Berks) has announced that three Union Township projects received a combined $166,000 in state grants through the Local Share Account (LSA) – Category 4 Facilities Program. The funding, approved this week by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA), will address critical infrastructure needs in the township.

“The funding announced today through the LSA Category 4 Facilities Program is great news for Union Township and for the SD44 constituents that live in this part of Berks County,” Sen. Muth stated. “This funding will allow the township to be better prepared during emergency situations, make improvements to the Public Works building, and finally replace an aging and costly truck used daily by township employees – which was a priority for Union Township officials.”

The largest portion of the funding, $100,000, has been allocated for the purchase of a new 2025 Freightliner truck to replace the township’s current 27-year-old vehicle. This truck will play a vital role in the daily operations of the Public Works Department, including maintaining roads and parks.

An additional $45,124 has been awarded for replacing the deteriorating rubber roof on the Union Township building. The project involves removing the existing roof and installing a modern, weather-resistant alternative designed to improve insulation and withstand challenging environmental conditions.

Lastly, $20,894 has been granted for the purchase and installation of a generator to serve as a secondary power source for the Public Works building, ensuring continued operations during power outages or emergencies.

The funds, distributed under the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, support projects in the public interest within eligible counties, including Berks. These initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure and public services for local residents.
