CLAYMONT, DE — Delaware State Police have arrested two juveniles following a high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle in Claymont on Monday night.
A 16-year-old male from Lewes, Delaware, and a 15-year-old male from Claymont, Delaware, were apprehended after an alleged car chase that occurred at around 9:48 p.m. on November 20, 2023.
A trooper on patrol reportedly noticed a tan 2008 Volvo XC9 with a Pennsylvania registration moving at an unusually high speed on Darley Road near the I-95 overpass. A computer check revealed that the Volvo had been reported stolen from Troop 1 on November 19, 2023, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop.
However, the driver of the Volvo allegedly ignored the police signal and sped westward on Darley Road at unsafe speeds. The vehicle eventually veered into a private parking lot, where both the driver and the front passenger jumped out and attempted to escape on foot, disregarding all commands to stop.
After a brief chase, the two juveniles were taken into custody without any incidents. An inspection of the scene revealed that the Volvo had collided with an unoccupied parked van in the lot due to the alleged failure of the 16-year-old driver to put the vehicle in park before exiting.
Following their arrest, the juveniles were taken to Troop 1 and charged with various crimes.
The 16-year-old juvenile faces charges of receiving stolen property over $1,500 (a felony), disregarding a police officer signal (a felony), resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and multiple traffic violations. He was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released to a guardian after posting a $5,000 secured bond.
The 15-year-old juvenile was charged with resisting arrest. He was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released to a guardian on a $1,000 unsecured bond.
Information, a criminal complaint, or an arrest is not a declaration of guilt. A suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
