Tragic Wilmington Crash Claims Life, Leaves Another Critically Injured in Fiery Multi-Vehicle Collision

WILMINGTON, DEDelaware State Police are investigating a tragic multi-vehicle crash that occurred late Tuesday, resulting in one fatality and leaving another individual critically injured. The collision involved three vehicles and temporarily shut down Thompson Bridge Road for several hours.

Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 7:28 p.m., a blue 2009 Hyundai Elantra traveling northbound on Thompson Bridge Road veered into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with a black 2015 Mazda 6. The Mazda was pushed off the road and came to rest near a tree line, while the Hyundai became disabled in the roadway. Moments later, a white 2018 Kia Sportage traveling southbound struck the disabled Hyundai.

Police stated that the two occupants of the Hyundai had exited the vehicle after the initial crash; one of them, a 22-year-old Wilmington man, was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His identity is being withheld pending family notification. The second occupant, who remains unidentified, was also hospitalized with critical injuries.

The Mazda’s driver, a 45-year-old man from West Chester, Pennsylvania, was not injured, while the driver of the Kia, a 31-year-old woman from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

Investigators are still working to determine the driver of the Hyundai and the circumstances leading up to the crash. The roadway was closed for approximately 5.5 hours as police conducted a detailed investigation and cleared the scene.
