WILMINGTON, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a tragic incident involving a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Thursday evening on Governor Printz Boulevard in Wilmington.
The crash took place on December 5, 2024, at approximately 5:31 p.m., when a 31-year-old Claymont man was driving a 2021 Tesla Model 3 westbound on Governor Printz Boulevard near Downing Drive. At the same time, a pedestrian, identified as a 58-year-old woman from Wilmington, attempted to cross the roadway from the area of Downing Drive.
Authorities reported that the woman entered the vehicle’s path, resulting in her being struck. The area where she attempted to cross lacked a marked crosswalk and proper street lighting, conditions that contributed to the incident. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Officials are withholding her identity until her family has been notified.
The driver of the Tesla was not injured in the crash.
The roadway was closed for approximately three hours as state troopers conducted an investigation at the scene. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and is requesting assistance from anyone who witnessed the collision.
Witnesses are encouraged to contact Master Corporal M. Calio at 302-365-8483. Tipsters may also relay information anonymously through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
Officials stress that the investigation into this incident is ongoing, and all details are subject to change as new information emerges.
