Tragic End to Sunday Night Drive: 60-Year-Old Man Dies as Car Plunges into C&D Canal

DELAWARE CITY, DE — A peaceful Sunday night took a tragic turn in Delaware City as a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 60-year-old man from Elkton, Maryland. The fatal incident occurred in the Chesapeake & Delaware (C&D) Canal and is currently under investigation by the Delaware State Police.

The crash happened on February 11, 2024, at around 11:45 p.m. The victim was driving a red 2014 Chrysler 300 westbound on a gravel roadway on North Canal Road, just west of the Reedy Point Bridge. For reasons yet unknown, the Chrysler failed to remain on the road, veering onto the rocky banks of the C&D Canal. The vehicle then plunged into the water and became submerged.

The driver, whose identity is being withheld until his family can be notified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragic incident has left local residents shocked and saddened. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is working to piece together the events that led to this unfortunate accident.

As part of their ongoing investigation, the police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.
