WILMINGTON, DE — The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred on Thursday, December 5, 2024, in Wilmington, resulting in the death of a 32-year-old woman.
The incident took place around 10:20 a.m. when a Honda Civic, turning left onto East Lea Boulevard southbound from Colony Boulevard, collided with a northbound GMC Yukon on East Lea Boulevard. Preliminary findings indicate that the Honda entered the GMC’s path, causing the GMC to strike the driver’s side of the Honda.
The driver of the Honda, identified as Shamar Backus, 32, of Wilmington, Delaware, was unrestrained and sustained life-threatening injuries. She was transported to a nearby hospital but died two days later on December 7, 2024. An unrestrained front-seat passenger in the Honda, a 28-year-old woman from Wilmington, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
The driver of the GMC, a 36-year-old man from Wilmington, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash led to the closure of the roadway for approximately three hours to allow for investigation and cleanup.
