BEAR, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a tragic crash that left one woman dead and another individual injured on Tuesday evening along the northbound off-ramp of State Route 1 to Pulaski Highway.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on March 25, 2025. A 74-year-old driver from Bear, Delaware, was navigating a GMC Sierra along the ramp when the vehicle drifted onto the shoulder near a curve. The GMC initially struck the left rear of a parked Mazda CX-9, then hit a 37-year-old woman from New Castle who was walking near the Mazda. The vehicle continued forward, colliding with a 39-year-old man, also from New Castle, who was working to change the tire of a disabled vehicle parked in front of the Mazda.
Emergency services responded promptly, and the 74-year-old driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene. The 39-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The 37-year-old woman was also taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Authorities are withholding her identity until her family has been notified.
The crash prompted the closure of the off-ramp for approximately four hours as investigators from the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit processed the scene.
The investigation remains active. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the accident or possesses relevant information to contact Corporal Grade One D. McKenna at (302) 365-8486 or submit anonymous tips through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
