Traffic Pattern Shift Announced for City Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation

Traffic Restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA —The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a traffic pattern shift on City Avenue (U.S. 1) beginning Monday, March 24, as part of a $22.4 million bridge rehabilitation project in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, and Philadelphia.

Currently limited to a single lane in each direction between Bryn Mawr Avenue and 47th Street, City Avenue will reopen to two lanes in each direction starting next week. This adjustment will facilitate ongoing work scheduled through August 2025, including steel repairs, utility construction, and other activities planned for spring and summer.

The effort will rehabilitate the 114-year-old, 60-foot-long concrete arch bridge, which was last widened in 1934. Project updates include sidewalk repairs, utility line replacements, retaining wall rehabilitation and extension, stormwater management enhancements, and resurfacing of both the bridge and its roadway approaches.

Pedestrian access improvements are also planned, with new ADA-compliant curb ramps and a stair system connecting City Avenue, SEPTA’s Bala Station, and the Parkside Cynwyd Trail.

Motorists traveling through the area are advised to expect significant delays and should plan for additional travel time. All construction schedules are weather dependent.
