Traffic Light Installation Planned for U.S. 1 to Enhance Pedestrian Safety

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced plans to install traffic lights as part of a project to improve the pedestrian bridge at St. Joseph’s University along U.S. 1 (City Avenue). The initiative covers the corridor in Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, and aims to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians.

The project, executed under a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit, will require alternating lane closures on U.S. 1 in both directions between 59th Street and Lapsley Lane. These traffic restrictions will be in place from Monday, March 3, through Friday, March 7. Motorists traveling along this major thoroughfare should anticipate delays and are encouraged to plan for extra travel time. PennDOT notes that the schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.

St. Joseph’s University is managing the implementation of this improvement, which forms part of broader efforts to enhance safety infrastructure in the area. The new traffic lights and related upgrades are expected to not only improve pedestrian safety but also better regulate traffic in a heavily traveled section of U.S. 1.
