Traffic Disruptions Expected on U.S. 422 in Montgomery County Next Week

Traffic, flagging

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Motorists navigating Montgomery County’s U.S. 422 are gearing up for a challenging week ahead, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) rolls out significant travel restrictions under two major improvement projects. The planned construction activities, set to commence next Monday, April 1, promise to bring about considerable backups and delays, impacting both daily commutes and commercial traffic.

For those traveling along U.S. 422, the week will kick off with intermittent 15-minute traffic stoppages and slower traffic paces in both directions between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard. These disruptions, scheduled from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM through Thursday, April 4, are necessary to accommodate controlled blasting operations aimed at excavating the area for drainage construction. Motorists are advised to expect sudden halts and to proceed with caution for the safety of both the work crews and fellow drivers.

In addition to the stoppages, lane closures will be a common sight along eastbound U.S. 422 for shoulder reconstruction and clearing efforts. From Monday, April 1, through Thursday, April 4, a segment of the highway between Keim Street and Evergreen Road will see reduced lane availability from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Similarly, westbound lanes between Evergreen Road and Hanover Street will undergo shoulder reconstruction, prompting lane closures from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM within the same dates.

Further complicating the week’s traffic landscape, Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) in Schuylkill Township, Chester County, will embrace a single lane pattern managed by flaggers. This adjustment, intended for utility installation, will span from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Thursday.

Looking beyond the immediate week, PennDOT outlines a longer-term disruption beginning Sunday, April 6, through September. During this period, U.S. 422 will experience alternating single lane closures on eastbound lanes from the Route 29/Collegeville interchange to the Bridgeport/Valley Forge (Route 23) interchange, affecting Upper Providence and Lower Providence townships. These night-time closures, running Sundays through Thursdays from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, are essential for sawcutting and concrete patching operations.

The extensive $83.6 million project aims to reconstruct and improve U.S. 422, including bridge replacements between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road. Meanwhile, the $6.9 million effort focuses on rehabilitating pavement on eastbound U.S. 422 between the Route 29/Phoenixville and Route 363/Trooper Road interchanges.

As these projects unfold, PennDOT urges travelers to allow extra time when passing through the affected areas, anticipating significant delays. With all scheduled activities contingent upon favorable weather, motorists are encouraged to stay informed on potential schedule changes.
