Three Suspects Indicted in February Thatcher Street Shooting, Wilmington Police Report

WILMINGTON, DE — The Wilmington Police Department has announced significant progress in the investigation of a shooting incident that occurred on Thatcher Street in February.

On February 28, 2023, at around 9:53 p.m., police responded to a reported shooting on the 2300 block of Thatcher Street. Upon arrival, they found an 18-year-old male and a 20-year-old male, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Detective Douglas Rivell of the Criminal Investigations Division led the investigation, which resulted in the identification of three suspects: two 17-year-old male juveniles and 20-year-old Sherron Elam-Coursey.

The case was presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury on November 6, and an indictment was returned for all three suspects. At present, the two juveniles are being held at the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center, and Elam-Coursey is committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, all on unrelated matters.

Each of the juveniles faces charges of attempted first-degree murder (two counts), first-degree conspiracy (two counts), possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (two counts), and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. Both have been arraigned in New Castle County Superior Court and remain in detention on $600,000 cash-only bail.

Elam-Coursey faces similar charges and was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20. He remains committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $342,000 cash-only bail.

The Wilmington Police Department encourages anyone with additional information about this case to come forward.
