PHILADELPHIA, PA and MEXICO CITY, Mexico — 311Literacy and Little Bookmates are excited to announce the return of The Great Reading Tournament, a major event designed to promote literacy and biliteracy among students in the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. Set to run from November 1 through 23, the tournament has registered over 15,000 students from various regions, including participants from more than 38 cities in Mexico.

Founder of 311Literacy, Ariadna Trapote, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming event, stating, “We are thrilled to kick off the next Great Reading Tournament this week to inspire young readers and help create a lifelong habit. We can’t wait to build on the success of our inaugural Tournament, held last March, which reached more than 5,000 children, who read 20,000 books for 700,000 minutes.”

The tournament aims to ignite a love for reading in both English and Spanish, allowing children from diverse backgrounds to enhance their language skills through engaging competitions. By incorporating bilingual books and interactive challenges, the event seeks to foster literacy and biliteracy, equipping students with essential skills for academic and future success.

Canva is supporting the tournament by providing digital gift certificates. In their words, “Reading is the gateway to endless possibilities, and Canva provides thousands of ways to use those creative passions that reading inspires.”

Sonia Gaspar, Directora General of Proeducación, shared her excitement: “We are thrilled to have our students participate in The Great Reading Tournament! This event not only fosters a love for reading but also empowers our students to showcase their talents and creativity.”

Participants, aged 6 to 15, will log their reading minutes using the LightSail Literacy Solution, which offers a vast selection of over 10,000 digital titles in both English and Spanish. This platform allows students to track their progress and compete for prizes based on their reading time.

311Literacy’s mission is to eliminate barriers and promote equal educational opportunities by advocating for literacy and bilingual education.
