MEDIA, PA — Delaware County recently welcomed an environmental delegation from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, to explore collaborative strategies in tackling climate change. This visit, hosted by County Council Member Elaine Paul Schaefer and other local officials, emphasized the global nature of environmental challenges and fostered dialogue on innovative solutions.
The Taiwanese delegation presented their “New Generation Environmental Education” policy, an initiative by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education aimed at fostering sustainability from a young age. This policy mandates that all students from first through twelfth grade receive comprehensive environmental education, integrating sustainability into the national curriculum. The goal is to cultivate a generation that prioritizes sustainable decision-making and innovation.
County Council Member Elaine Paul Schaefer expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “It’s inspiring to know that a global network of individuals and organizations is working together to address the challenges of climate change. We know that we can’t do it alone, and it’s through these international partnerships that we can learn from each other and make meaningful progress.”
Delaware County showcased its own sustainability efforts through a presentation on the “Sustain Delco” plan. This initiative focuses on mobilizing community engagement to drive significant environmental changes. The county’s educational outreach efforts, designed to empower residents and mitigate the impacts of climate change, were a point of interest for the visiting delegation.
The visit also included a tour of the county’s ceremonial courtroom and an informal discussion session, where Delaware County officials shared insights on waste reduction efforts in partnership with Capozzoli’s Café. This interaction offered both parties a chance to exchange ideas and experiences in sustainability practices.
The meeting was facilitated by the World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Equity Collaborator, Justin J. Harris, and supported by consultant Shikha Miglani. Chester City Mayor Stefan Roots also participated, contributing his own perspectives to the enriching dialogue.
The exchange highlighted the importance of international cooperation in environmental stewardship, emphasizing that learning and collaboration across borders can significantly advance sustainability goals.
