PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a significant development affecting traffic flow in Northeast Philadelphia, with the scheduled closure of Tacony Street due to ongoing Interstate 95 bridge construction activities. This essential infrastructure project will necessitate the closure of Tacony Street between Aramingo Avenue and Bridge Street from Monday, September 30, through Wednesday, October 9, during the overnight hours of 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
As part of the comprehensive $270 million I-95/BS2 project, this initiative aims to construct a new southbound viaduct on I-95 at Tacony Street. During the specified closure times, detour routes will be clearly marked to guide motorists. Traffic originating from Aramingo/Harbison Avenue will be diverted right onto Bridge Street, followed by a left onto Tacony Street, while vehicles from Tacony Street will be redirected right onto Bridge Street and left onto Aramingo Avenue/Harbison Avenue.
PennDOT urges motorists to anticipate delays and allow for additional travel time when navigating the vicinity of the construction site, as substantial traffic congestion is expected. This closure is a crucial component of the broader project, which involves the reconstruction of I-95 in both directions from Margaret Street to Carver Street, with an anticipated completion year of 2027.
