UPPER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the closure of a key route in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, due to significant pavement failure. The northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), a crucial artery for local traffic, is closed between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard.
The announcement, made on Thursday, December 14, 2023, follows the emergence of a sinkhole along the route, forcing an immediate response from PennDOT. The stretch of road will remain closed until further notice, allowing PennDOT engineers to assess the extent of the damage and develop a comprehensive repair plan.
During the closure, motorists traveling northbound on U.S. 202 are advised to use Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard as alternative routes. Local access will be maintained up to the point of closure. However, drivers should anticipate delays and backups in the vicinity of the work area and are encouraged to allow extra time when traveling near the affected zone.
The closure of U.S. 202 North is not a new occurrence, with similar pavement failures reported in the past. It’s an urgent reminder of the need for continued investment in infrastructure maintenance and renewal.
