Shock at ASPIRA Charter School: Employee Injured in Accidental Hallway Shooting

NEWARK, DEDelaware State Police are investigating an accidental shooting that left a school bus driver injured Thursday morning at ASPIRA Charter High School.

The incident occurred on April 10, 2025, at approximately 7:02 a.m., inside the school located at 750 Otts Chapel Road. Authorities report that a 41-year-old male employee, who also served on the school’s Culture & Climate Team, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg after his concealed firearm discharged unintentionally inside the building.

Preliminary findings suggest the firearm, which was concealed in the employee’s waistband, discharged due to handling or manipulation. The shooting took place in a hallway while students and staff were present, though no one else was injured. The school’s constable rendered aid before the injured man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Unit is actively investigating the matter. Officials encourage anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Detective M. Conway at 302-365-8411.

No charges have been announced at this time as the investigation continues.
