MEDIA, PA — MyChesCo recently interviewed Bryan Shrouds, owner of Seniors Helping Seniors DelCo, to learn about his unique business model that not only helps seniors age in place but also creates job opportunities for seniors, a typically overlooked group in the labor market.
Shrouds shared the inspiration behind the founding of Seniors Helping Seniors DelCo. “I spent 25 years in corporate finance. After being laid off, I realized I needed a career with more purpose. Coaching sports for my kids made me realize how much I enjoy helping others. When I found Seniors Helping Seniors, I knew it was the fulfillment I had been searching for.”
Seniors Helping Seniors DelCo employs active seniors to assist their peers in maintaining their lifestyles at home. This peer-to-peer interaction enhances the quality of life for both the caregiver and the client. “The beauty of our model is we help seniors on multiple fronts,” Shrouds explained. “We provide job opportunities for active seniors and match them with those who need assistance.”
Employing seniors comes with its own set of challenges and benefits. Shrouds noted that finding seniors to fill jobs can be difficult, but once they join, they become dedicated employees. “They are committed to doing good for their peers and often go out of their way to provide the best care possible,” he said.
Shrouds emphasized the importance of senior employment in today’s labor market. “Keeping seniors actively employed gives them a sense of purpose, which improves their quality of life and keeps them engaged in the community,” he stated. “They are often overlooked due to age discrimination that still exists in the workplace.”
Hiring seniors benefits both the business and the community. “Senior caregivers offer a peer-to-peer relationship with our clients, providing empathetic and compassionate care,” Shrouds said. He shared a story of a client who was initially reluctant to have a caregiver but eventually built a strong friendship with her senior caregiver.
Seniors bring unique qualities and skills to the workforce, such as a strong work ethic and the ability to relate to clients through shared experiences. They also play a crucial role in training and mentoring the next generation of workers. “Seniors set the tone with their commitment and face-to-face interaction skills,” Shrouds explained. “These qualities serve as a positive example for younger, less experienced employees.”
Shrouds also shared the story of a 65+ caregiver who, after struggling to find a job in her field, found fulfilling employment with Seniors Helping Seniors DelCo. “She had experience providing care for family members and decided to inquire about a position with us. She has been a wonderful addition to our team,” he said.
Looking to the future, Shrouds plans to expand the services provided by Seniors Helping Seniors DelCo. “I aim to hire 100 seniors within the next year and partner with the VA to support veterans. We also plan to add respite care options and expand into the northern Delaware market,” he revealed.
Seniors Helping Seniors DelCo is making a significant impact by empowering seniors to age in place while providing meaningful employment opportunities to their peers.
