READING, PA — In a significant boost for public education in Berks County, Sen. Judy Schwank (D-Berks) has successfully secured an additional $1 million for the Reading School District and $500,000 for the Antietam School District in Ready to Learn Block Grants. This funding surge is set to bolster pre-K and elementary school educational programming, providing a much-needed infusion of resources for the two districts.

Ready to Learn Block Grants are a crucial component of the state’s efforts to enhance education quality and accessibility. Allocated according to a formula established by the 2023-2024 Pennsylvania state budget, these grants aim to foster enriched learning environments and promote student success. This year’s budget allocated a substantial $295 million to these grants statewide.

Under this formula, Reading initially received $4,785,693, with Antietam being granted $167,132. Thanks to Schwank’s advocacy, the final totals have now surged to $5,785,693 for Reading and $667,132 for Antietam.

These additional funds are critical for several reasons. First, they underscore the importance of investing in early childhood education, a period deemed vital for cognitive and socio-emotional development. By supporting programs for pre-K and elementary school students, the grants aim to lay a strong foundation for future academic success.

Second, the grants can ease the financial strain on districts like Reading and Antietam, which are constantly grappling with resource constraints. While these grants are not eligible for facility improvements, the significant increase in funding could free up other dollars already allocated towards eligible programming, increasing financial flexibility for these districts.

Schwank expressed her commitment to ensuring that these districts didn’t get overlooked in this year’s budget process, acknowledging the tireless efforts of both districts to meet their students’ needs. She further stated, “I’m proud to partner with the leadership of both Reading and Antietam and support their efforts to provide students with a high-quality public education.”

In particular, the 300% increase in grant funding for Antietam, while not a direct response to the flooding over the summer, could alleviate some economic pressures on the district. This financial relief may provide Antietam greater flexibility as they continue working towards a long-term plan.

As these Ready to Learn Block Grants are funneled into Reading and Antietam’s educational programs, students stand to gain significantly, reinforcing the adage that an investment in education pays the best interest.
