LANCASTER COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has issued an important announcement regarding the upcoming closure of key routes as part of the Route 30/Route 222 Interchange Improvement Project in Lancaster County. This closure will affect both eastbound and westbound Route 30, as well as the bridge carrying northbound and southbound Route 222 over Route 30, to facilitate the installation of beams on a new bridge that will eventually connect southbound Route 222 to eastbound Route 30.
Weather permitting, the closure will commence at 9:00 PM on Friday, October 25, and is expected to remain in place until 5:00 AM on Monday, October 28. During this period, motorists will need to follow designated detour routes, which have been strategically planned to manage traffic flow and minimize disruption.
For those traveling eastbound on Route 30, the detour will direct drivers to Route 501 (Lititz Pike) southward to Route 222 south, continuing onto Duke Street, then Route 23 east to rejoin Route 30. Eastbound Route 30 travelers heading to northbound Route 222 will be rerouted via Route 272 (Oregon Pike) to Jake Landis Road, then Butter Road north to merge with northbound Route 222. Westbound Route 30 traffic will be redirected to northbound Route 222, with exits leading to Route 272 (Oregon Pike), Butter Road, Jake Landis Road, Route 272 south, and onward to southbound Route 222 and westbound Route 30. Lastly, southbound Route 222 to eastbound Route 30 traffic will utilize Route 30 west, diverting to Route 501 (Lititz Pike) south, Route 222 south, Duke Street, and Route 23 east.
As these detours are set in place, motorists can anticipate delays and congestion along the rerouted paths. PennDOT advises travelers to either avoid the area or allow extra time for journeys and to exercise caution while driving through these zones.
This significant infrastructure project, managed by JD Eckman, Inc., involves substantial improvements to the Route 222/Route 30 Interchange. Key developments include widening Route 222 from four lanes to six and constructing additional lanes and ramps to enhance traffic capacity and safety. The initiative also entails replacing and widening bridges along the route, ensuring increased clearance and improved traffic flow.
The entirety of this $72,173,900 project is slated for completion by September 3, 2027. Throughout the construction period, four lanes of traffic will be maintained to alleviate disruptions.
