LANCASTER, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that rolling stops are anticipated on Monday for blasting activities related to the reconstruction of Route 222.
Weather permitting, the contractor will conduct blasting operations along Route 222 in the vicinity of Lancaster Bible College on Monday, August 12. Blasts will occur between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. These activities are weather dependent and will be performed intermittently as needed.
As a safety precaution, there will be rolling stops of up to 15 minutes in both directions of Route 222 between the Oregon Pike ramps and Route 30, as well as on Route 30 in both directions at the on-ramps to Route 222. Traffic on nearby streets will also be halted during the blasts. This will cause delays. Motorists are advised to remain alert and watch for stopped or slow-moving traffic.
The project includes significant improvements at the Route 222/Route 30 Interchange and the reconstruction of Route 222 from the interchange north approximately one mile near Stoner Park, just south of the Landis Valley Road bridge spanning the highway.
On the north side of the interchange, a second lane will be constructed on the southbound Route 222 ramp to westbound Route 30, tying into the existing northbound Route 272 (Oregon Pike) exit ramp. Additionally, a third lane will be added from the westbound Route 30 ramp to northbound Route 222, extending to the existing westbound Route 30 third lane approaching Oregon Pike.
The south side of the interchange will see the construction of a second ramp lane from eastbound Route 30 to northbound Route 222. This new ramp lane will tie into the existing Route 30 travel lane, giving drivers the option to continue east or exit to northbound Route 222 using the right lane of eastbound Route 30.
Route 222 will be expanded from four lanes to six lanes from the interchange to the north end of the project limits.
In addition, the two bridges carrying the Route 222 ramps over Route 30 will be replaced. The northbound Route 222 bridge will be widened to two lanes. The Eden Road bridge spanning Route 222 north of the interchange will remain in place, with Route 222 under the bridge being lowered to increase clearance.
PennDOT urges motorists to exercise caution and patience while navigating these work zones to ensure safety.
