PHILADELPHIA, PA — Commuters in Philadelphia should prepare for a series of roadwork disruptions on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) undertakes a comprehensive $36.8 million project. This initiative aims to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the highway, including its associated ramps and over 20 bridges, significantly impacting traffic flow.
Starting on Saturday, September 14, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 PM the following day, a left lane closure will affect westbound I-76 between the I-676 (Vine Street Expressway) and Spring Garden Street interchanges for concrete pavement patching. Additionally, from Sunday, September 15, until Friday, September 20, nighttime lane closures will be enforced on both directions of I-76 between the Montgomery Drive and U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) interchanges for paving and guiderail installation.
Moreover, specific ramps will experience closures, such as the first ramp from westbound I-76 to U.S. 1 South on September 16 and 17, redirecting traffic to alternative routes. Similarly, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound I-76 will be closed during the same period, with detours provided.
PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra time for travel, anticipating traffic congestion and delays. All scheduled activities are contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
