SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the continuation of resurfacing and bridge repair operations on Interstate 476. This work is part of a $63.7 million project aimed at enhancing nearly 17 miles of the interstate, along with its associated on-and-off ramps and bridges, stretching from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.
From Monday, August 19, through Friday, August 23, lane closures will occur nightly from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM on sections of southbound I-476 between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges for milling and paving activities. Additionally, lane closures with flagging will be implemented on Baltimore Pike between Turner Road and Paper Mill Road in Nether Providence and Springfield townships from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for overhead bridge repairs.
Further, on Wednesday, August 21, and Thursday, August 22, lane closures will be in place from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM on both northbound and southbound I-476, spanning from just south of the Route 3 (West Chester Pike) Interchange to the Media/Swarthmore Interchange for ITS installation.
Motorists are advised to plan for extra travel time due to anticipated delays and backups. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
The project involves milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, performing repairs on 49 structures, and improving 21 stormwater management basins. It also includes addressing rock slope stabilization issues, repairing sound walls, and replacing inlets at select locations. New pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail will also be installed.
The goal of this project is to extend the design life of the interstate, improve ride quality and safety, and enhance the condition of roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail, and signs.
H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor for this project, which is financed entirely with federal funds. Physical construction is expected to be completed by late 2025.
