DOVER, DE — Delaware’s sand dunes are off-limits for sledding, snowboarding, and other recreational activities—actions that could potentially harm fragile wildlife habitats and weaken coastal defenses. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is urging residents and visitors to respect these vital natural structures and adjust their winter plans accordingly.
The dunes, which act as critical buffers protecting beaches and nearby communities from storms and erosion, also serve as habitats for delicate plant and animal species. To preserve these ecosystems, the DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation prohibits recreational activities and pedestrian traffic on dunes in state parks such as Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore, except in designated crossing areas.
This simple ask from DNREC is more than a restriction—it’s a call to action to safeguard Delaware’s coastline and maintain the balance between recreation and environmental stewardship during the winter season. By keeping off the dunes, everyone can play a role in protecting these invaluable natural resources for generations to come.
