PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled plans for significant nighttime construction on Interstate 95 and the closure of Tacony Street in Philadelphia, aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing the driving experience.
The construction will commence on Monday, November 11, and Tuesday, November 12, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, with the eastbound I-676 ramp to southbound I-95 closed. Additionally, a left lane on southbound I-95 will be shut between the I-676 and Columbus Boulevard interchanges for sign and barrier installation. During this period, drivers will be rerouted via I-676 east, exiting at 6th Street/Ben Franklin Bridge, proceeding east on Race Street, and then south on Columbus Boulevard to re-enter I-95 at Water Street.
On Wednesday, November 13, and Thursday, November 14, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramp from Columbus Boulevard to northbound I-95 will close. Concurrently, a left lane closure will occur on northbound I-95 between Columbus Boulevard and the I-676 interchanges for barrier installation. Motorists will be directed north on Columbus Boulevard to access the northbound I-95 on-ramp at Summer Street. Additionally, a left lane closure will be implemented on southbound I-95 between Market Street and the I-76 interchange for sign installation.
Moreover, Tacony Street will be closed daily through Saturday, November 16, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM between Aramingo Avenue and Bridge Street for overhead bridge construction. Motorists are advised to use Harbison Avenue and Bridge Street as detour routes during these closures.
These lane and ramp closures are integral components of PennDOT’s $329 million I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) Project, which aims to replace and extend the cap over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard between Walnut and Chestnut streets. The Tacony Street closure is part of the $270 million I-95/BS2 project, focused on the reconstruction of I-95 from Margaret Street to Carver Street in both directions.
