PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the closure of eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in the Grays Ferry area of Philadelphia this weekend for critical bridge deck repairs. From 9:00 PM on Saturday, September 21, until 4:00 AM on Monday, September 23, the stretch from just after the Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue (Exit 346B) to just before the 34th Street on-ramp will be inaccessible.
During this closure, regional traffic will be rerouted via I-676 East (Vine Street Expressway) to I-95 South and alternatively, I-476 South to I-95 North. Local traffic will exit at Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue (Exit 346B) and navigate through University Avenue Bridge/34th Street to re-enter I-76 East. All ramps to and from I-76 East will remain operational.
To ensure drivers are informed, electronic message boards will be deployed along I-76 and other major roadways. This closure, coordinated with the City of Philadelphia and other stakeholders, will continue over three additional weekends, allowing contractors to repair and resurface deteriorating concrete sections on the bridge that spans the Schuylkill River and CSX rail tracks.
Motorists are advised to circumvent the area due to anticipated congestion both on I-76 East and surrounding streets. For ongoing updates and traffic information, please visit the MyChesCo Traffic Center.
