Planned Bridge Repairs on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) to Cause Lane Closures

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced significant bridge repairs scheduled for U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) in Philadelphia. These repairs are part of a $100.6 million project aimed at rehabilitating the Wayne Junction Viaduct over the SEPTA tracks and Nicetown neighborhood.

The planned work will result in periodic single and double lane closures on both northbound and southbound U.S. 1, between Henry Avenue and Interstate 76. The closures will commence from 8:00 PM Friday, August 16, and continue until 5:00 AM Monday, August 19. During this period, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound I-76 will also be closed. Motorists will be directed to detour east on I-76, exit at Montgomery Drive, and then take the ramp to westbound I-76.

Additionally, from Monday, August 19, through Thursday, August 22, night work will necessitate further closures:

  • From 8:00 PM to 11:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound I-76 will again be closed. Motorists will follow the same detour route.
  • Periodic single and double lane closures will occur on northbound U.S. 1 between Henry Avenue and Interstate 76 from 8:00 PM to 11:00 AM the following morning.
  • On southbound U.S. 1, periodic single and double lane closures will take place between I-76 and Henry Avenue from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following morning.

Drivers are advised to plan for extra travel time due to anticipated significant backups and delays in the work areas. PennDOT emphasizes that all scheduled activities are weather dependent and may change based on weather conditions.
