PHILADELPHIA, PA — Pig Iron Theatre Company, a celebrated force in physical theater, is set to debut its newest production, Franklin’s Key. This highly anticipated sci-fi adventure, written by Dan Rothenberg and Robert Quillen Camp, will run from June 3 to 29, 2025, at Plays & Players Theatre, located at 1714 Delancey Street in Philadelphia.
Described as a magical blend of history, science fiction, and adventure, Franklin’s Key reimagines Benjamin Franklin’s hidden discoveries in an alternate reality. The story follows two teenage prodigies, Temple and Arturo, who uncover secret technology beneath Philadelphia’s iconic landmarks. Their discovery sparks a battle between rival factions seeking to control Franklin’s long-concealed power. Packed with high-stakes action and fantastical elements, the production transforms venues such as City Hall and the Wanamaker Building into mysterious portals, creating an exhilarating experience for audiences of all ages.
Pig Iron Theatre Company has brought together a stellar creative team to bring the production to life. The show features special effects by Obie Award-winning designer Skylar Fox (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and an original score by Rosie Langabeer, known for her acclaimed collaborations with BalletX. Scenic designs by Anna Kiraly and lighting by Tony-nominated designer Amith Chandrashaker (Merrily We Roll Along) promise to turn the stage into a dazzling landscape.
Co-director and writer Dan Rothenberg underscored the show’s visionary appeal, describing it as “a Marvel movie translated for the stage,” filled with imaginative stagecraft and striking illusions.
Franklin’s Key will transport audiences across time with performances Wednesday through Sunday evenings at 7 p.m., weekend matinees at 2 p.m., and additional performances on June 3 and June 10 at 7 p.m. The production is scheduled for a special Press Night on June 11.
