PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia’s Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi has announced that a series of temporary street closures and parking restrictions will commence the week of May 6 to facilitate street resurfacing across the city. The project, expected to wrap up by the end of August, targets several key thoroughfares in various police districts, aiming to improve road conditions for motorists and residents alike.
Resurfacing operations are slated for numerous streets, including Rising Sun Avenue, Belfield Avenue, and Grays Ferry Avenue, among others. Notably, work on Byberry Road and Montgomery Drive is scheduled to start only after local schools adjourn for the summer break, minimizing disruption.
The comprehensive resurfacing will unfold in three phases: milling the old asphalt, adjusting manhole covers and resetting utility boxes, followed by the final paving process. These tasks will be carried out in separate stages over the coming months, with milling operations predominantly occurring during night shifts to lessen the impact on daily traffic.
Both paving and milling activities are designated for overnight hours, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., while adjustments to utility boxes and manholes will take place during the day, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Despite the extensive scope of work, roads will remain open, with temporary measures in place to guide traffic safely around the construction sites.
Residents should prepare for parking restrictions, as temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted ahead of each construction phase. The Streets Department urges vehicle owners to adhere to these notices to avoid towing. In cases where towing is necessary, affected individuals are advised to contact their local Police District for information on retrieving their vehicles.
This vital infrastructural upgrade is being executed by James J. Anderson Construction Co., Inc., under the Citywide Resurfacing CW110 Project. Funded by both Federal and City resources, this initiative signals a significant investment in Philadelphia’s road network, promising enhanced safety and convenience for all roadway users.
Motorists and residents are encouraged to plan extra time for travel around work areas and to stay informed about the progress of this important citywide effort to improve Philadelphia’s streets.
