PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office has earned the prestigious Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This recognition highlights the office’s efforts to train over 80% of its community-facing personnel in autism awareness, equipping them with critical skills to interact effectively with autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals.

The CAC certification process included scenario-based training designed to help law enforcement communicate and engage with those on the autism spectrum. The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office is now the first law enforcement agency in Pennsylvania to achieve this milestone, underscoring its commitment to inclusivity and specialized community service.

“I’m encouraged by the 320 Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office sworn and civilian employees completing their training for this certification,” said Sheriff Rochelle Bilal. “Residents must know that law enforcement is taking measures to learn more about autism and neurodiversity. When we first launched the Autism Decal Program in 2023, it was only the beginning of assisting residents’ inclusivity.”

The Autism Decal Program, introduced under the Bilal Administration, provides free decals to notify emergency responders that an occupant of a home or vehicle may be autistic. This initiative ensures that deputies trained in autism response can approach situations with informed caution and understanding. The decals are available to Philadelphia residents who register with the Sheriff’s Office, and placement is recommended near the front door of homes or rear windows of vehicles.

“This certification is a testament to the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office’s dedication to prioritizing safety for every individual, especially for those who are autistic or sensory-sensitive,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman. “IBCCES is proud to award them with the Certified Autism Center™ credential, highlighting their ongoing commitment to enhancing accessibility throughout their community.”

The Sheriff’s Office will further its outreach by hosting the 3rd Annual National Autism Awareness Event on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Kroc Center of Philadelphia, located at 4200 Wissahickon Avenue. The event promises resources, networking, and support for individuals and families impacted by autism.

The CAC certification marks a significant step in fostering trust, understanding, and accessibility within Philadelphia’s diverse communities. This achievement aligns with the Sheriff’s Office’s broader vision of advancing inclusivity and ensuring equitable service for all residents. Building on these efforts, the office remains committed to enhancing public safety, awareness, and support for the autism community.
