Philadelphia Schools Embark on Energy Efficiency Overhaul with Energia

School District of Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The School District of Philadelphia, in partnership with engineering firm Energia, has launched two landmark projects aimed at transforming local schools into models of sustainability and 21st-century learning spaces. Lowell Elementary School has recently completed an ambitious energy efficiency upgrade, while FitzPatrick Elementary School has begun a significant construction project to enhance its facilities.

The initiative at Lowell, known as GESA 1.3, represents a $19.4 million investment into the school’s infrastructure, resulting in annual energy savings of approximately $44,161. The project saw the installation of LED lighting, high-efficiency boilers, a central chiller, digital temperature control systems, and other improvements designed to reduce the school’s carbon footprint and support an optimal learning environment.

“We are proud to unveil the upgrades at Lowell Elementary, showcasing our dedication to sustainable and efficient educational spaces,” said Oz Hill, the district’s Chief Operating Officer.

Meanwhile, FitzPatrick Elementary School has embarked on a $21.6 million GESA 1.4 project, expected to save $27,360 annually in energy costs. The initiative includes a staged installation of new boilers and a conversion from steam to hot water heating, tailored to minimize classroom disruptions.

“This summer marks the beginning of a critical phase for FitzPatrick, as we deploy energy-efficient solutions while maintaining the continuity of school operations,” noted Dave Newman, Vice President of Engineering at Energia.

Both projects highlight the Philadelphia School District’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the creation of modern, comfortable educational settings. Through strategic partnerships and innovative engineering solutions, the district is setting a precedent for integrating sustainability into the fabric of public education.
