PHILADELPHIA, PA — On Earth Day, April 22, the Philadelphia Navy Yard achieved a national sustainability milestone by earning LEED Neighborhood Development (ND) Gold Certification, making it the largest LEED-ND project in the United States. Encompassing 295 acres with 39 existing and 38 future buildings, this certification elevates the Navy Yard as a leading model for sustainable urban redevelopment.

“Ensemble and Mosaic’s commitment to making the Navy Yard the largest LEED-ND in the country takes the development to the next level,” said Kate McNamara, Executive Vice President of the Navy Yard for PIDC. “It clearly cements the Navy Yard as the most sustainable neighborhood in Philadelphia and one of the most sustainable in the nation.”

The certification reflects over two decades of intentional development, with sustainable initiatives reducing energy and water usage, creating walkable neighborhoods, and prioritizing public transit and green spaces. The Navy Yard’s development plan, spearheaded by Ensemble Investments and Mosaic Development Partners, includes 8 million square feet of LEED-certified facilities, with a significant focus on life sciences, housing, and mixed-use spaces.

“This is an incredible achievement… and validates our efforts to create a healthier, more sustainable neighborhood,” said Tyler MacDonald, Senior Vice President at Oxford Properties.

With the addition of AVE Navy Yard’s mixed-use complex this year, the Navy Yard welcomes its first residential tenants in history, further solidifying its transformation into a vibrant, sustainability-focused urban hub.

This milestone demonstrates that sustainability and economic development can coexist. With its LEED-ND Gold status, the Philadelphia Navy Yard sets a benchmark for green infrastructure, offering a blueprint for future urban communities across the nation.
