PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) recently celebrated the graduation of nearly 100 new members. These individuals successfully completed rigorous training courses at the Fire Academy, preparing them to serve in one of the nation’s busiest emergency services systems.
The graduation ceremony, held on December 22nd at Franklin Towne Charter Elementary School, honored the achievements of Fire Cadet Class 201 and EMS Class 2. Fire Commissioner Adam K. Thiel expressed his gratitude for the new influx of qualified cadets, especially at a time when other agencies are grappling with attracting and retaining first responders.
The PFD has been proactive in its recruitment efforts, establishing robust pipelines to bring in new talent. Still, Thiel reiterated the need for ongoing assistance to ensure the Fire Department continues to reflect and be strengthened by the city’s diversity.
EMS Class 2 comprises 3 paramedics, 23 emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and 3 advanced EMTs. These cadets entered the Fire Academy already certified, where they underwent further training to prepare for their roles in Philadelphia’s EMS system.
Class 201 spokesperson, Devin Strange, emphasized that their journey was just beginning and pledged continued growth and development as firefighters and EMTs. He expressed eagerness for the future successes and positive impact of Class 201 in the coming decades.
The ceremony also marked the last PFD graduation under Mayor Jim Kenney’s tenure. The Kenney administration has overseen significant reinvestment in the department, including new apparatus, additional personnel, and the reopening of several engine and ladder companies closed since 2009.
The PFD presented Mayor Kenney with a commemorative helmet as a token of appreciation for his support over the past eight years. The helmet, designed by Kenney’s father, a former Battalion Chief in the PFD, has become a standard piece of safety equipment in departments across the country.
The department is already preparing for its next wave of cadets, with Fire Cadet Class 202 set to begin at the Fire Academy on January 8. The city will also start accepting applications for paramedics on the same day, providing yet another opportunity for Philadelphians to serve their community.
