Penn’s Landing Bridge Closure: A Multi-Year Pause for Progress

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced an extensive, multi-year closure of the Chestnut Street bridge over Interstate 95 and Columbus Boulevard at Penn’s Landing. This closure, taking effect from Monday, January 15, is in preparation for the demolition of the existing covering over I-95 between Chestnut and Sansom streets.

Directing Traffic Flows

The closure is expected to significantly impact SEPTA bus routes serving Penn’s Landing area, including Routes 5, 17, 21, 33, 38. 42, and 44. Detailed information on the affected bus routes will be provided by SEPTA in early 2024. Meanwhile, motorists on Chestnut Street will be directed south on Front Street.

Pedestrian Access Maintained

Despite the upheaval, access to Penn’s Landing and the waterfront will remain open to pedestrians. They will be able to use the Market Street bridge from 2nd Street, ensuring that foot traffic can continue to enjoy the riverside area throughout the construction period.

An Ambitious Vision

The demolition of the bridge and the adjacent covered area over I-95, known as Chestnut Park, is scheduled to begin once the bridge is closed. These steps are part of a grander vision: PennDOT’s ambitious $329 million I-95/CAP project. The aim? To replace, expand, and enhance the current covered section of I-95, while also improving multi-modal connections between Center City and the Delaware River waterfront.

The new covering over I-95 will be expanded to span between Chestnut and Walnut streets, extending from Front Street east to cover Columbus Boulevard. But it’s not just about transportation. The project also includes plans for a new park at Penn’s Landing, transforming the area into a more inviting and accessible space for the public.
