PHILADELPHIA, PA – In a move aimed at enhancing travel and safety for pedestrians and drivers alike, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a comprehensive plan to upgrade 10 intersections along Washington Lane in Philadelphia. The public is invited to learn more about these proposed changes and voice their opinions during a live virtual meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 18.
The project, stretching from Route 309 (Cheltenham Avenue) to Stenton Avenue, seeks to address several critical areas to improve overall safety and accessibility. Among the planned improvements are the installation of pedestrian countdown timers at signalized intersections, a shift from pedestal-mounted signals to more visible mast arm signals, and the construction of curb bump-outs at intersections with high pedestrian traffic. These bump-outs extend the sidewalk, reducing the crossing distance and making pedestrians more visible to drivers.
Additionally, the project will focus on enhancing the coordination of arterial signals to streamline traffic flow, installing ADA-compliant curb ramps for better accessibility, and adding a flashing beacon and raised crosswalk at the intersection of 76th Street/Blair Road to further ensure pedestrian safety.
To foster community engagement and feedback, PennDOT is utilizing a digital platform for the public meeting, allowing residents to participate from the comfort of their homes. Scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM on April 18, the meeting will feature a comprehensive presentation by the department’s design team, followed by a Q&A session where attendees can ask questions and express concerns.
To ensure that all interested parties, regardless of physical location or mobility restrictions, have the opportunity to contribute to the dialogue on these vital infrastructure improvements, individuals requiring special assistance are encouraged to reach out to PennDOT Project Manager Nathan Parrish to arrange for necessary accommodations.
For those unable to attend the live event, a recording of the meeting and related materials will be available on the project’s webpage, where the public can also submit feedback via an online comment form.
The Washington Lane improvement project is part of PennDOT’s broader effort to enhance infrastructure safety and efficiency across District 6. By leveraging technology and community input, PennDOT aims to create a safer, more accessible environment for all Philadelphia residents and visitors, reflecting the department’s ongoing dedication to public safety and engagement.
