PennDOT to Enhance Five-Points Intersection, Expect Traffic Delays

Traffic, flagging

MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has set its sights on a major overhaul of the notorious Five-Points Intersection in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County. This $14.2 million project aims to significantly improve travel and safety conditions at the busy junction of Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road). As utility work progresses next week, drivers are cautioned to prepare for potential delays.

From Monday, April 8, through Friday, April 12, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, motorists will encounter lane closures at key segments around the intersection:

  • On Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), from North Wales Road to McLaughlin Road.
  • Along Route 463 (Cowpath Road/Horsham Road), between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road.
  • On Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road), stretching from Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) to Betty’s Avenue.

Travelers are urged to allocate additional time for their journeys through these areas, as the construction activity is likely to cause backups and delays. The timing of these works is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.

The centerpiece of PennDOT’s ambitious plan involves expanding the intersection to accommodate more travel lanes. Currently, the intersection allows for 15 travel lanes; post-improvement, this number will rise to 18. Specifically, the project will introduce additional through lanes for both directions on Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road) and on southbound Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike). This expansion is expected to streamline traffic flow and curtail the frequency of crashes.

Further enhancements are on the docket, including upgrading and retiming the intersection’s signalization to optimize traffic movement. Pedestrian safety will also see significant improvements with the installation of sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and guiderails. Additionally, the project will address stormwater drainage issues, refresh signage and pavement markings, adjust driveway access points, and mitigate erosion and sediment concerns.

A noteworthy improvement will benefit westbound Route 463 (Horsham Road) motorists intending to make a right turn onto northbound Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road), promising smoother and quicker transitions.

As the community anticipates the benefits of these improvements, patience and caution are encouraged among all who navigate the Five-Points Intersection during the construction phase.
