PennDOT Plans Temporary Median Reconstruction on I-476, Aims to Improve Travel and Safety

Traffic Alert

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to undertake temporary median reconstruction next week on Interstate 476 at the MacDade Boulevard Interchange in Ridley Township, Delaware County. The project aims to enhance travel and safety on MacDade Boulevard and at the northbound I-476 and MacDade Boulevard Interchange.

From Monday, November 20, through Wednesday, November 22, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, lane closures are expected on the southbound I-476 ramp to MacDade Boulevard (Exit 1) and on MacDade Boulevard between the I-476 Interchange and Fairview Road. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area due to anticipated backups and delays. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

As part of the project, a left turn lane will be constructed on eastbound MacDade Boulevard at the Bullens Lane Intersection to help reduce potential rear-end crashes and improve sight lines for left-turning vehicles. Traffic signals will be modernized, and updated curb ramps will be installed at each quadrant of the intersection to meet current Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements.

Additionally, two dynamic message boards will be mounted on steel columns, and CCTV cameras will be installed on traffic signals along MacDade Boulevard between Bullens Lane and Fairview Road, enhancing connectivity.

The project also includes improvements to the ramp from northbound I-476 to MacDade Boulevard by widening and realigning the westbound ramp where it approaches MacDade Boulevard to form a “T” intersection. Drivers will turn left or right onto MacDade Boulevard at a newly signalized intersection.

In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion, auxiliary lanes will be constructed on northbound I-476 within the existing roadway footprint just north of the MacDade Boulevard Interchange and just south of the U.S. 1 Interchange. Guiderail installations are also planned along sections of northbound I-476.

The existing pedestrian bridge over Crum Creek will be removed and a new one will be reconstructed with a new alignment adjacent to MacDade Boulevard.

Allan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on this $16.2 million project, which is financed with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds.
