MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated a substantial milling and paving operation on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), signaling potential delays for Montgomery County motorists. The $55.2 million project, aimed at enhancing nearly two miles of roadway from Johnson Highway to Swede Road across Norristown, East Norriton, and Whitpain townships, will see lane closures and likely traffic congestion during the evening hours.
Starting Monday, May 6, through Friday, May 17, travelers will encounter weeknight lane restrictions from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM along both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 202, extending from Johnson Highway to Township Line Road. PennDOT advises drivers to allot additional time when passing through the affected segments to accommodate for expected backups and slowdowns. The schedule for these activities is subject to change based on weather conditions.
The undertaking is not merely a superficial facelift; it entails comprehensive improvements including the reconstruction and widening of Dekalb Pike to accommodate two lanes heading north, one lane south, and a dedicated center turn lane. This enhancement is designed to alleviate congestion and facilitate smoother traffic flow.
Additionally, the project will introduce five-foot bicycle lanes on both sides of the road, construct new sidewalks at select locations, and oversee the reconstruction of a bridge and a box culvert. The efforts extend to erecting two sound walls, building retaining walls, and updating signals, signage, and pavement markings. Drainage systems will be upgraded, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will be integrated to further improve traffic management.
Allan Myers, LP, headquartered in Worcester, Montgomery County, has been appointed as the general contractor for the project, which is funded entirely by federal resources.
This initiative represents a key phase in a broader multi-phase program dedicated to reconstructing, widening, and enhancing a 9.1-mile section of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), including specific intersections from Johnson Highway in Norristown to Route 309 in Montgomery Township. The overarching goal is to ensure safer, more efficient travel along this vital corridor, benefiting countless commuters, residents, and businesses in the region.
