PennDOT Launches $26.5 Million Bridge Replacement Project in Tinicum Township

traffic alert expect delays

TINICUM TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has commenced construction on a $26.5 million project to replace the 76-year-old Route 291 (Governor Printz Boulevard) bridge over the Conrail railroad in Tinicum Township, Delaware County. The project, which began on February 13, aims to ensure a safe and efficient crossing for the daily traffic of approximately 21,520 vehicles.

The new structure will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction and include 8-foot shoulders to accommodate Pennsylvania Bicycle Route E and a planned multimodal trail connection. Additional improvements under the project include resurfacing roadways on both sides of the bridge, upgrading guiderails and drainage systems, installing pavement markings and signage, and upgrading traffic signals at the Bartram Avenue intersection.

Beginning February 14, a 24/7 left lane closure is in effect in both directions on Route 291 between Bartram Avenue/Scott Way and Stevens Drive to facilitate bridge construction. Traffic will shift as repairs progress, with one lane open in each direction to limit disruptions. PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra time when passing through the area as backups and delays are likely. Bicyclists will follow a posted detour to maintain safety.

The project, fully funded through federal dollars, is being managed by J.D. Eckman, Inc., a contractor based in Atglen, Pennsylvania. All work is weather dependent, and completion plans are in progress to minimize community-wide impact while enhancing this vital transportation link.
