PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that the demolition process for the Rotunda and Walnut Street pedestrian bridge will commence on Monday, November 27. This initiative forms part of an extensive $329 million I-95/CAP project, which aims to replace, expand, and enhance the current covered section of Interstate 95. The project also seeks to ameliorate multi-modal connections between Center City Philadelphia and the Delaware River waterfront.
The first phase of the demolition will focus on the Rotunda, along with the adjacent staircase and platform located east of Columbus Boulevard at the eastern end of the pedestrian bridge. Following this, the pedestrian bridge over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard will be demolished.
During the initial stages of the Rotunda demolition, both Columbus Boulevard and I-95 will remain unrestricted. However, subsequent demolition activities on the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge will necessitate daytime lane closures on Columbus Boulevard and off-peak and overnight lane closures and detours on I-95.
The demolition of the Rotunda and bridge over Columbus Boulevard will transpire during the day, while the removal of the bridge section over I-95 is planned for overnight during off-peak travel periods.
Provided the weather conditions are favorable, the demolition over Columbus Boulevard is scheduled for completion by mid-December. The removal of the structure over I-95 and its associated ramps is anticipated to be wrapped up by late January 2024.
