PennDOT Continues Roadway and Bridge Construction on U.S. 1 and U.S. 13 in Philadelphia

traffic alert expect delays

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to continue roadway and bridge construction next week as part of a project to replace the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia.

From Monday, December 4, through Friday, December 8, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, there will be a partial left lane closure on the northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) ramp at Old York Road.

This closure aims at facilitating roadway, curb, and drainage improvement work. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area or use an alternate route due to expected backups and delays. All scheduled activities under this contract are weather dependent.

Drivers should note that the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp remains closed 24/7 through January 2024. The ramp was initially closed to traffic on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, for demolition and replacement.

During the ramp closure, southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) motorists are directed to follow the posted detour by using Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to access U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).

The project involves the removal of the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge carrying the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard). It will be replaced with a single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge that will provide additional vertical clearance.

Additional improvements include constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches of the new bridge, performing full depth paving, and installing and constructing a new sidewalk, ADA curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderail, and pavement markings.
