PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that the next phase of a significant $7.8 million project will commence next week, aiming to replace the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park section.
Starting Monday, January 22, through Friday, January 26, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily, a series of lane closures will be in place. A partial left lane closure will affect the northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) ramp at Old York Road for road, curb, and drainage improvements. Simultaneously, periodic single left lane closures will occur on both directions of U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street for barrier installation and shoulder work.
In addition, periodic lane closures are scheduled on southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between C Street and Warnock Street for the removal of overhead sign coverings. These activities are expected to cause traffic backups and delays, and motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these areas or consider using an alternate route. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Due to unforeseen weather conditions, the 24/7 closure of the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp will continue until at least Friday, January 26. In light of this, southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) motorists are directed to use Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to access U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).
The ongoing project, fully financed with federal funds, involves the replacement of the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge with a single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge that will provide additional vertical clearance. Additional improvements include constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches of the new bridge, performing full-depth paving, and installing and constructing new sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderail, and pavement markings.
South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J., is the contractor entrusted with this substantial project.
