PennDOT Continues $7.8 Million Road and Bridge Upgrade in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park Section

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the continuation of roadway and bridge construction next week. This work is part of a $7.8 million project to replace the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park neighborhood.

On Thursday, January 4, and Friday, January 5, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a partial left lane closure will be in effect on the northbound U.S. 1 ramp at Old York Road. The closure will facilitate improvements to the roadway, curb, and drainage systems.

During the same hours, periodic single left lane closures will take place on northbound and southbound U.S. 1 between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street. These closures will allow for barrier installation and shoulder work.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these areas due to expected backups and delays. Alternatively, drivers may opt to use alternate routes. All scheduled activities under this contract depend on weather conditions.

As a reminder to drivers, the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp will remain closed 24/7 through January 2024. This closure began on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, to facilitate the demolition and replacement of the ramp. During this period, southbound U.S. 1 motorists are directed to follow the posted detour by using Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to access U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor, South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J., will replace the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge with a single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge. This new structure will provide additional vertical clearance.
