PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the continuation of a major infrastructure project in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia. The $7.8 million project, financed entirely with federal funds, involves replacing the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).
Partial left lane closures will be in effect on the northbound U.S. 1 ramp at Old York Road from Tuesday, December 26, through Friday, December 29. These closures, which will occur between 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, are necessary for roadway, curb, and drainage improvement work.
During the same period and times, periodic single left lane closures will be implemented on northbound and southbound U.S. 1 between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street. The closures are necessary for barrier installation and shoulder work. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these areas or consider using an alternate route due to expected backups and delays. All scheduled activities are dependent on weather conditions.
Motorists should also note that the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp will remain closed around the clock through January 2024. This closure, which began on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, is required for demolition and replacement. During this time, southbound U.S. 1 motorists are being directed to follow a posted detour using Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to access U.S. 13.
The project involves removing the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge carrying the southbound U.S. 13 ramp over U.S. 1 and replacing it with a single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge. This new structure will provide additional vertical clearance.
Other improvements under the project include constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches of the new bridge, performing full-depth paving, and installing and constructing a new sidewalk, ADA curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderail, and pavement markings.
South State, Inc., based in Bridgeton, N.J., is the general contractor overseeing the project.
