PennDOT Announces Roadwork on U.S. 1 for Wayne Junction Viaduct Rehabilitation Project

Lane Closure - Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has released an update regarding ongoing work on the U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) as part of a $96.6 million project aimed at rehabilitating the Wayne Junction Viaduct. The viaduct, which stretches over the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia, will undergo drainage improvements and guiderail installations next week.

On Monday, December 11, and Tuesday, December 12, motorists can expect a left lane closure on southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Cayuga Street and Berkley Street from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This closure is necessary to carry out drainage repairs.

In the evenings from Monday, December 11, through Friday, December 15, periodic right lane closures will be implemented on both directions of the U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway). Specifically, the southbound direction between 9th Street and Interstate 76 will experience closures from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. On the northbound direction between I-76 and 9th Street, closures will be in place from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. These closures are for the installation of guiderails.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these work zones due to expected backups and delays. All scheduled activities are dependent on weather conditions.

These works are part of the post-construction punch-list activities for PennDOT’s substantially completed Wayne Junction Viaduct project. The project forms part of PennDOT’s broader commitment to maintaining and improving infrastructure throughout Pennsylvania.
