SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced upcoming resurfacing and bridge repair operations on Interstate 476. This project aims to improve nearly 17 miles of the interstate, including associated ramps and bridges, from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.

From Monday, August 5, through Friday, August 9, lane closures will occur from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM on sections of southbound I-476 between the U.S. 30 (Lancaster Avenue) and I-95 interchanges for milling and paving. Additionally, the same hours will see lane closures on the on-and off-ramps from the U.S. 1 (Lima/Springfield) Interchange (Exit 5) to northbound and southbound I-476.

During the day, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a lane closure with flagging will be in place on Baltimore Pike between Turner Road and Paper Mill Road in Nether Providence and Springfield townships, Delaware County, for overhead bridge repair. The ramp from East Baltimore Pike to-and-from southbound I-476 will also be closed and detoured weeknights from August 5 to August 16 for milling and paving. Detours will direct motorists to use Turner Road, Rogers Lane, Plush Mill Road/Wallingford Road, and westbound Baltimore Pike to access the ramp.

On Tuesday, August 6, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, lane closures will be in place on northbound and southbound I-476 from just south of the Route 3 (West Chester Pike) Interchange to the Media/Swarthmore Interchange for the installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Motorists should anticipate significant backups and delays when traveling through these work zones. PennDOT advises drivers to allow extra time for their commutes and to plan accordingly. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor will mill and overlay I-476 travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, repair 49 structures, improve 21 stormwater management basins, address rock slope stabilization issues, repair existing sound walls, replace inlets at select locations, and install new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderails.

H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, is the general contractor responsible for this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. Physical construction is expected to be completed by late 2025.
