PennDOT Announces Reopening and Temporary Closure of Cayuga Street Ramp in Infrastructure Upgrade

PennDOT

PHILADELPHIA, PA — In the latest development in a substantial infrastructure upgrade, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that the ramp from Cayuga Street to the southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) in Philadelphia will reopen on Wednesday afternoon, January 10.

The reopening marks a significant milestone in PennDOT’s $100.6 million project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct over the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia. The Cayuga Street ramp was closed as part of this major initiative, which aims to improve both safety and traffic flow in the area.

However, motorists should note that the ramp will close again for a short period a week or two after reopening. This temporary closure will allow the contractor to install a fence along the southbound side of the viaduct, further enhancing safety measures for drivers and pedestrians alike.

During this time, motorists will be directed to use the existing detour from Broad Street (Route 611), onto W Hunting Park Avenue, then Wissahickon Avenue, and finally Abbotsford Avenue to the Fox Street on-ramp to the southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway).

The upcoming reopening and temporary closure of the Cayuga Street ramp is just one piece of the larger puzzle that is the Wayne Junction Viaduct project. Yet it serves as a clear indicator of the progress being made in enhancing Philadelphia’s transportation infrastructure.
