SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has embarked on a comprehensive initiative to repair and pave over 200 miles of state highways throughout the Philadelphia region. This ambitious effort aims to enhance road safety and provide a smoother driving experience across Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. However, as these operations get underway, motorists are advised to brace for inevitable slowdowns.
The resurfacing projects, spanning multiple counties, will necessitate various travel restrictions and lane closures during specified hours. Commuters should note the following key restrictions:
- Chester County:
- U.S. 30 (Coatesville-Downingtown bypass) will see periodic lane closures in both directions between Business U.S. 30 and Route 10 (Octorara Trail) interchanges for spray patching from April 8 through April 10, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
- Delaware County:
- Concord Road will experience a lane closure with flagging between Bethel Road and U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) for base repair and paving, nightly from April 7 through April 11, 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
- Additionally, daytime lane closures with flagging for base repair and utility adjustments on Concord Road are scheduled from April 8 through April 12, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- Engle Street will have a lane closure for milling and paving between 9th Street and Concord Road from April 8 through April 10, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- Montgomery County:
- Upper Ridge Road will undergo lane closures for milling and paving between Route 29 (Gravel Pike) and Route 63 (Main Street) from April 10 through April 12, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Philadelphia:
- Walnut Street will see lane closures for line striping between 33rd Street and 63rd Street (Cobbs Creek Parkway) on April 8 and April 9, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Aramingo Avenue and Castor Avenue are also scheduled for night-time lane closures for line striping on April 10, 11, and 12.
These activities are all part of PennDOT’s larger mission to seal roadways and enhance the overall quality of state highways. The contractors, under PennDOT’s directives, are employing new asphalt pavement that promises to seal surfaces and offer a safer, smoother ride for all motorists.
As these improvements unfold, drivers navigating through the affected areas are encouraged to allocate extra travel time to their journeys. The expected slowdowns, while temporary, are a small price to pay for the substantial long-term benefits of safer and more reliable roadways. All scheduled work is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
